Rover’s member Debra Sampson Scott has recently completed a charity ride in France with the Charity Wheels on the Western Front. Below she has shared a few words with us about the experience:
My love of cycling started with two charity rides for St Helena Hospice. Amazing rides from Colchester to Brussels and London to Paris.
I have recently completed my third cycle charity challenge. This latest ride of 310 miles around Normandy was to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day Landing. Not only did we see some beautiful places but we had a fantastic historian with us. Some of this journey was an emotional one especially when we visited the Commonwealth cemeteries. Honouring those that lost their lives we carried out three wreath-laying ceremonies.
At some of the places we visited it was sometimes difficult to comprehend the enormity of the casualties lost and just the cleanup operation itself, which sometimes took years. This was to enable the land to be fit for agriculture.
Not only are charity rides fun but a great way to socialise and see some awesome places.
If you’re looking for an epic challenge Wheels on the Western Front will be holding another in 2021 to Arnhem.
