The Final Centurion

What a day! Fantastic turnout from the Rovers Youth contingent, I lost count of the number of riders we had competing, but it was a lot! Some great performances and most importantly, lots of smiles from the competitors. Well done to all those who took part yesterday, and across the series, it was a great showcase for all the great riders we have and for the club as a whole. We look forward to welcoming even more riders to the Northern Gateway next year!

One of the many highlights of the day was a Rovers 1-2-3 in the U12 Boys race where the boys really put a lot of their coaching to good use. Here is a write-up of the race from the perspective of Jack, the race winner:

Once again the weather was kind to the riders racing the finale (round #4) of the Centurion Race Series, but although there was no rain the cross headwind was brutal! The field of 17 riders set off at quite a pace and stayed together for the first couple of laps, with Jack and two other CRCC riders, George and Isaac taking turns on the front and setting the pace.On lap two, Jack attacked and broke away as the group crossed the start/finish line, closely followed by George and Isaac and two of the LVYCC riders. The lead group of five riders stayed ahead of the pack until lap five, when Jack, George and Isaac attacked and managed to get a gap and break the elastic between them and the two LVYCC riders. The three leading CRCC riders worked well together for the remaining three laps, steadily increasing their lead over the second group on the road. The final was one of the most exciting of the whole series, coming down to a sprint between Jack, George and Isaac. They started the sprint early, and as they came out of the final corner, Jack lead out with George on his wheel, and Isaac a few bike lengths behind. George came out of Jack’s slip stream to try to come round him before the line, but Jack sprinted strongly and just managed to beat George over the line by less than half a wheel length! Isaac came in a few bike lengths behind to claim 3rd place on the day, and completing a Colchester Rovers 1-2-3 on the podium. What a final, and what a sprint by the boys! Chapeau
